Bangladesh beat Australia by nine wickets at Marrara on Sunday, chasing 57 in the second session of the fourth day to win a Test in this country for the first time.
Mominul Haque cut Beau Webster to the boundary for the runs that ended it. He was 30 not out. Bangladesh lost one wicket in the chase and took under an hour over it.
Australia had resumed the morning at 4 for 161, still 67 behind. They cleared the deficit and not much more, all out for 284 with a lead of 56. Cameron Green made 102, his first Test hundred in Australia and his first fifty here in three and a half years. He hit four fours in a shade under five hours. Hasan Mahmud bowled him, and the innings went quickly after that.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz took 5 for 66, removing Steve Smith, Alex Carey, Beau Webster and Nathan Lyon. Hasan Mahmud finished the innings with 3 for 56 and the match with 9 for 111. He was named player of the match.
The game was set up on the first day, when Australia batted and were out for 198 in 53 overs. Hasan Mahmud took 6 for 55 in that innings. Steve Smith made 71 and nobody else passed 23.
Bangladesh then batted 138 overs for 426. Tanzid Hasan scored 101, his first Test century in his second match. Najmul Hossain Shanto made 84 and Mehidy 65. Josh Hazlewood took 6 for 89 and became the ninth Australian to reach 300 Test wickets.
Bangladesh had played two Tests in Australia before this one, both in 2003, at this ground and at Cairns. They lost the first by an innings and 132 runs and the second by an innings and 98. Their only previous win over Australia anywhere was at Dhaka in 2017, by 20 runs, and Australia levelled that series in Chattogram.
The second Test starts on Saturday at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay and runs to 26 August. Bangladesh lead the series 1-0.
