Bangladesh bowled Australia out for 198 on the opening day of the first Test in Darwin, Hasan Mahmud taking a career-best 6-55.
It is Australia's lowest Test total against Bangladesh. The previous mark was 217, made at Mirpur in 2017.
Pat Cummins won the toss at Marrara Stadium and batted. Hasan had both openers before the innings settled, Travis Head chopping on for 22 and Jake Weatherald edging behind for 23, and Australia went to lunch at 4-74.
Steve Smith made 71 from 109 balls with seven fours and a six. Nobody else passed 23. Marnus Labuschagne edged Ebadot Hossain to slip for 1, Cameron Green chipped Taskin Ahmed to short midwicket without scoring, and Beau Webster was bowled by Taskin for a duck. Alex Carey played on to Ebadot for 19.
The tail did not last. Cummins and Mitchell Starc both edged Hasan behind, and Hasan finished the innings when Nathan Lyon top-edged a pull to midwicket. Taskin and Ebadot took two wickets each.
It is Hasan's third five-wicket haul in Test cricket and his best return. He bowled full and at the stumps on a surface that offered him more than Australia expected in the middle of August.
This is the third men's Test played at Marrara Stadium and the first since 2004. It is also Bangladesh's first Test in Australia in 23 years, the tour that took them to Darwin and Cairns in 2003 being the last.
Bangladesh started their reply late in the day. Tanzid Hasan and Mominul Haque were at the crease at stumps.
Play resumes on Friday morning. Australia's bowling attack of Starc, Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Lyon has 198 to defend, which on the evidence of Thursday is fewer runs than this pitch is worth.
