Australia resume the fourth day of the first Test at Marrara on Sunday at 4 for 161, still 67 runs behind Bangladesh, who have lost both of the Tests they have previously played in this country.
The game turned on the first morning and has not turned back. Australia batted first and were bowled out for 198 in 53 overs, with Hasan Mahmud taking 6 for 55. Steve Smith made 71 from 109 balls with seven fours and a six. Nobody else passed 23.
Bangladesh then batted for 138 overs and made 426. Tanzid Hasan scored 101 from 197 balls, Najmul Hossain Shanto 84 from 126, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz 65 from 154. Josh Hazlewood finished with 6 for 89 and became the ninth Australian bowler to take 300 Test wickets. Mitchell Starc took 2 for 79.
The second innings started the way the first one did. Jake Weatherald was bowled by Hasan Mahmud for a duck off the third ball he faced. Travis Head went the same way for 17, and Australia were 2 for 37. Marnus Labuschagne was bowled by Taijul Islam for 31.
Smith made 44 from 88 before Mehidy caught and bowled him midway through the final session, taking the return catch from a long way behind the popping crease. Australia were 4 for 122 at that point.
Cameron Green and Alex Carey saw out the rest of the day. Green is 43 from 86 balls, Carey 19 from 50.
Mehidy has the tightest figures of the innings so far at 1 for 20 from 13 overs, four of them maidens. Hasan Mahmud has 2 for 33 and eight wickets for the match. Taskin Ahmed has bowled 12 overs for 38 without a wicket.
Bangladesh have beaten Australia in a Test once, at Dhaka in 2017, by 20 runs. Australia levelled that series in Chattogram. The two Tests Bangladesh played in Australia were both in 2003, at this ground and at Cairns, and Australia won them by an innings and 132 runs and an innings and 98 runs.
Two days remain. Australia have six wickets in hand and need to clear the deficit before they can set Bangladesh anything at all.
