Gang of Youths played the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall on Saturday night, their first show on home soil in almost five years and the first time the band has played the venue.
David Le'aupepe opened it alone, sitting at the piano for Hand of God before the rest of the band came in behind him. The set ran about 90 minutes and mixed new material with the back catalogue.
Both nights sold out. The Opera House said ticket allocation was strictly limited and that demand far exceeded supply. A second show follows on Monday at 9pm, and the two dates are the whole Australian run.
The band formed in Sydney and is now based in London, which is most of the reason five years went by. Le'aupepe is joined by drummer Donnie Borzestowski, guitarist and keyboardist Jung Kim, and multi-instrumentalist Tom Hobden.
Their record is straightforward enough to state without inflating it. The Positions, released in April 2015, entered the ARIA Albums Chart at number five. Go Farther in Lightness followed in 2017, went to number one, and won four ARIA Awards including Album of the Year. Their third album, angel in realtime, came out in 2022.
Two shows against that much demand is a booking decision rather than a shortage of rooms. The Concert Hall is a seated venue with a fixed capacity, and playing it twice instead of moving the same audience into an arena changes what the show is and how many people see it.
The Opera House is publicly owned. Its contemporary music program competes for the same nights as the rest of the building's program, and the number of available nights sets the ceiling on how much demand of this kind can be met at all.
For anyone who missed both, there is no third date. The band has not announced further Australian shows, and Monday night closes the run.
