Eleanor Patterson cleared 1.96 metres at Scotstoun Stadium to win the Commonwealth Games high jump, beating world champion Nicola Olyslagers into second on 1.93m. Athletics Weekly recorded the clearance as a Games record.
Patterson won the same title in the same city in 2014, at 18 and still finishing school, with 1.94m. Twelve years and two Olympic cycles later she went two centimetres higher.
The final did not run to schedule. Weather stopped the competition for several hours before the bar went back up. Patterson had said before the meet that she expected it would take a big jump to separate the two of them.
“The hot contender is definitely Nicola and we're both in incredible shape," Patterson said in the lead-up. "We'll both put our best foot forward and [it will take] two metres to take the win.”
Ky Robinson took the other Australian athletics gold of the session at Scotstoun. Robinson came into these Games as the first Australian man to run under 27 minutes for 10,000 metres.
Australia leads the medal table by a distance. The Glasgow 2026 results service has the team on 35 gold, 18 silver and 27 bronze for 80 medals. Canada is second on 13 gold and England third on 10, from a larger overall haul of 43 medals.
The pool has done most of the work. Australia took seven golds in a single Monday night session at Tollcross, including Sam Short in the men's 800m freestyle in 7:39.81, Meg Harris in the women's 100m freestyle in 52.90, Alexandria Perkins in the 100m butterfly in 56.38, Sam Williamson in the 50m breaststroke in 26.50 and Jenna Forrester in the 400m individual medley in 4:31.19. Beau Matthews won the SB9 100m breaststroke in 1:09.41.
The women's 4x200m freestyle relay closed the session. Mollie O'Callaghan, Lani Pallister, Hannah Casey and Inez Miller went 7:42.53 and finished more than seven seconds clear of England.
"So stoked to see how well the whole Australian team is going at this meet," O'Callaghan said, rating the squad among the best she has swum with. She had taken silver in the individual 100m freestyle earlier in the night behind Harris, with Shayna Jack third, an Australian sweep of the podium.
Swimming finishes on Wednesday. Athletics runs at Scotstoun until 1 August, and the Games close on 2 August.
