Australia finished the opening day of competition at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games on top of the medal table with 13 medals, six of them gold, and every gold came in the pool.
Lani Pallister took the first of them, winning the women's 400m freestyle in 3:59.56. She was the only swimmer in the final under four minutes, finishing ahead of New Zealand's Erika Fairweather. The time was outside the Games record of 3:58.06 that Ariarne Titmus set at Birmingham in 2022.
Jenna Forrester won the 200m backstroke in 2:08.17 after taking bronze earlier in the 400m freestyle. Hannah Fredericks was third in the backstroke, giving Australia two of the three medals in that final.
Both 4x100m freestyle relays went to Australia. Meg Harris, Shayna Jack, Alex Perkins and Mollie O'Callaghan won the women's in 3:31.40. The men's team of Flynn Southam, Kai Taylor, Harrison Turner and Kyle Chalmers went 3:09.49 for a Games record, holding off England, who swam 3:11.69. Southam led off in 47.09, more than half a second inside his previous best.
The para swimming program produced the other two golds. Jenna Jones won the women's 100m freestyle S13 with Kirralee Hayes third, and Alex Saffy won the men's 100m butterfly S10 ahead of teammate Col Pearse. Jasmine Greenwood took silver in the women's 200m individual medley S10.
Away from the pool the men's artistic gymnastics team won bronze, and Hani Watson took bronze in the women's heavyweight para powerlifting. Aaron Wilson won all three of his opening lawn bowls matches. Both 3x3 basketball teams went unbeaten on day one, the women beating Kenya, Jamaica and Fiji, the men beating New Zealand, Nigeria and Scotland.
Nigeria was second on the table with three gold and three silver. Scotland was third. New Zealand's two medals both came in the pool, both silver.
Day two has Cameron McEvoy in the heats of the 50m freestyle, the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay, Jack Ireland in the men's 200m freestyle S14, and Georgia Godwin leading the women's artistic gymnastics team. Australia also begins its netball title defence.
