Brisbane beat Collingwood by 63 points at the MCG on Friday night, 25.9 (159) to 15.6 (96), and all but secured third place on the ladder with it.

Logan Morris kicked a career-high eight goals from 15 disposals and eight marks. The 21-year-old is the first Brisbane player to kick eight in a game at the MCG, and the night moved him to second in the Coleman Medal.

The Lions led at every change and turned the match in the third quarter, kicking six goals to two to open a 49-point break. Conor McKenna and Oscar Allen kicked four each, Eric Hipwood three. Lachie Neale had 35 disposals and nine score involvements, Josh Dunkley 27 disposals and six tackles. The crowd was 66,846.

Collingwood's night got worse before half time. Scott Pendlebury went down with a knee bursa injury in the second quarter and took no further part. Nick Daicos, who finished with 26 disposals, was managed through the final term.

Jordan De Goey was the Magpies' best with 32 disposals, 10 score involvements and two goals. Charlie West and Angus Anderson kicked three each.

Craig McRae said afterwards that his injured players would need to get through training before the club's next match, which is now a knockout game.

That game is the point of the result. Collingwood finishes the home-and-away season outside the top six and drops into the Wildcard Round, the two knockout matches played from 28 to 30 August between the sides that finish seventh to tenth. Seventh hosts tenth and eighth hosts ninth. The winners take the last two finals seeds. The losers are done.

Collingwood will meet either Carlton or the Western Bulldogs. Whether it hosts that match or travels depends on how the last seven games of the round fall.

Brisbane moves to 64 points and would need Hawthorn to beat West Coast by about 80 points on Sunday to slip out of third. On current standings that puts the Lions into a qualifying final against Sydney, with a week off first and a home preliminary final if they win it.

The rest of round 24 runs through the weekend. Melbourne plays the Western Bulldogs and Carlton hosts Fremantle on Saturday afternoon, Geelong hosts Richmond and Adelaide hosts Greater Western Sydney on Saturday night, and the season closes on Sunday with Essendon and Port Adelaide, Sydney and North Melbourne, then Hawthorn and West Coast at Optus Stadium. The wildcard fixtures are set when that last siren sounds.
