Brisbane beat Hawthorn by 67 points at the Gabba on Friday night, 18.17 (125) to 8.10 (58), in front of 33,003.
Kai Lohmann kicked five. Logan Morris got four, Charlie Cameron three and Eric Hipwood two, and the Lions kicked at least five goals in every quarter after the first.
The margin built steadily rather than in one burst. Brisbane led by six at quarter time, 28 at the main break and 46 at three-quarter time, then added five goals to two in the last.
Lachie Neale had 35 disposals and eight tackles. Will Ashcroft, Harris Andrews and Levi Ashcroft were also among Brisbane's best, with Morris and Lohmann. Jarrod Berry played his 200th AFL game and Ryan Lester his 250th, Lester kicking a goal late.
Jack Gunston kicked three of Hawthorn's eight, with singles to Weddle, Moore, Macdonald, Impey and D'Ambrosio. Newcombe, Ward and Moore were the Hawks' best and could not slow the game through the middle.
The result reads better against what came before it. Brisbane lost to Carlton by 76 points the previous week. Hawthorn had won four straight.
It also tightens the top four. Hawthorn hold third on 58 points at 118.2 per cent, Brisbane fourth on 56 at 117.8, two points and four-tenths of a percentage point apart. Fremantle lead the competition at 18 wins and two losses on 147.3 per cent, and Sydney sit second on 60 points.
Below them the gap is thinner again. Adelaide and Melbourne are level on 52 points, Geelong and the Western Bulldogs level on 48, and Collingwood ninth on 46.
Round 22 is not finished. The rest of it runs through Saturday and Sunday, and every side from third to eighth can move before it is done. What Brisbane bought on Friday night was the percentage to make the double chance a live question again.
