Indie-Con Australia opens in Adelaide on Wednesday, running alongside the Australian edition of A2IM's Indie Week across the Mercury Cinema and Nexus Arts until Friday. The Australian Independent Record Labels Association hands out its 20th AIR Awards at Adelaide Town Hall on Thursday night.
Ninajirachi leads the nominations. The Melbourne producer is up for Independent Album of the Year for I Love My Computer and Independent Song of the Year for iPod Touch, plus a run of category nods in electronic music, production and engineering.
The album category also has Folk Bitch Trio, The 046, The Belair Lip Bombs and Way Dynamic. Song of the Year goes between Jem Cassar-Daley, Keli Holiday, Ninajirachi, Playlunch and Way Dynamic. Breakthrough Independent Artist has Folk Bitch Trio, Georgia Knight, Rageflower, Rona. and Yes Boone.
AIR expanded its dance and electronic categories this year. The old Best Independent Dance or Electronica Album or EP became Best Independent Electronic Album or EP, and two singles awards were added, one for dance and club, one for electronic. The full field runs to 23 categories covering hip hop, country, pop, jazz, classical, blues and roots, children's music and heavy.
The awards exist because the acts in them sit outside the three major label groups, and are released and marketed on budgets that do not compare. That has made the AIR shortlist a reasonable forward indicator of what the rest of the industry picks up later. Gotye, Courtney Barnett, Flume, Genesis Owusu and Amyl and the Sniffers all appeared in these categories before the majors and the commercial radio networks got to them.
The conference sitting underneath the awards is the part that matters to the labels in the room. Indie-Con runs the trade side of the week, and A2IM, the American independent labels body, brings its Indie Week program to Adelaide alongside it. The agenda for an independent label in 2026 is the same one it has been for a decade: what streaming pays per stream, who owns the recording, and how a release gets in front of an audience without a major's distribution deal behind it.
AIR returns to Adelaide, which carries a UNESCO City of Music designation, for the ceremony. Thursday night is invite-only and closer to a trade gathering than a televised awards night.
Nominees were announced on 13 May. Winners are named at Adelaide Town Hall on Thursday 30 July.
